Does your body
get all dietary supplements
from those pills?

Do you buy dietary supplements?

Well, at least statistically, there is a good chance that you do.

More than a half of adults in the United States take some kind of supplements, per National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2000).

(Not in the US?
I believe the odds are still good.)

I look around, and see no surprise here.

I swallow vitamins, my wife takes calcium, my co-worker buys antioxidants, and my best friend
buys beer...

Did I say beer?... Oh, no, sorry - he buys vitamin B complex.

(And beer...)

The more important question is:

How do you buy your dietary supplements?

By "how" I mean the decision criteria you use while making a purchase.

There are four ways to decide what supplements to buy:

  1. Find the most colorful bottle on the shelf in a supermarket
(That's what I did at first)

  2. Ask a friend and buy the same kind
    (Been there, done this, too)

  3. Ask a doctor
    (Just get the cheapest brand,
    my doctor said.
He is a good doctor, but I never asked him again about dietary supplements.)

  4. Do your own research and find out
(Huh?.. No normal person would do this.
    Dietary supplements? Boring!)
CURRENT POLL
The most important thing about dietary supplements is:
Affordable price
Effectiveness
Easy-to-use
Safety
Not sure

Don't look at me.

I am definitely not a "normal person".

With 9-5 job and 24/7 family, I spend my nights searching for answers to "boring" questions about vitamins, supplements, nutrition, etc.

Sometimes my findings are amazing... and totally useless.

Do you know that the liver of polar bear is poisonous because of a very high concentration of vitamin A?
No doubts, a great tip for those of us planning a survival adventure in northern Alaska.

Here is another one.

"Unless a tablet is dissolved in your stomach, the vitamins will not work."

Ha-ha, very funny.

Why a tablet would not dissolve in my stomach? My stomach can dissolve a pound of meat, and I will be asking for more. Don't tell me that my vitamin pills do not work!..

By the way, who is talking?

This is how I learned about US Pharmacopeia - an independent research organization, which sets quality standards for drugs and dietary supplements in the US.

They also conduct tests of health products, and provide quality certifications. "USP Verified" means that the product passed all USP quality tests.

As of that tablet in your stomach.. I mean - in my stomach, it is no so obvious that it indeed works.

Why?

Watch the video below, and you'll see.

So, where is the solution?

  • Use pills of high quality
As you saw in the video, all pills and tablets are not created equal. High quality pills are made with better ingredients, and this means better vitamin dissolution and absorption. See more details on solid supplements page.

  • Consider other forms of supplements
Dietary supplements can be produced not only in form of pills! Supplements in solid form (tablets, pills, caplets, capsules) are the most common - but there are other choices available today.
Liquid vitamins and minerals, spray vitamins, sublingual vitamins,
gel supplements - just find what suits you the best... and has the best taste!

What is my website about?

You can find here an overview of dietary supplements of different delivery forms – solid, liquid, gel, spray, and others, and learn about pros and cons of each form.

There are also pages dedicated to health and nutrition topics, for example joint pain, or water diet.

I am adding more pages constantly, so if you like what you see (I hope..), you can subscribe to a newsletter about updates using the form below,
or just scroll up and use an RSS button on the left to get all updates delivered to you instantly.

I've been trying to write about each topic in plain language -
but sometimes I could not avoid some biological or chemical terms.

I encourage you to do your own homework if something is not clear - or you can ask me, and I'll do my best to find the answer.

Wishing you health and happiness,
